Music History
By Diana Rogers
I have always been fascinated with music history, about studying composers and musicians of the past. I was fortunate to have 2 piano teachers when I was growing up that stressed the different periods of music history. Music did not stay the same over time. Composers changed what they wrote and were affected by new inventions going on at the time. Plus there were wars, art, poetry and the other musician's influence of the times. When I teach piano and my students study music history, they get a better understanding of how a piece is written and how it should be played. Here is a list of the Periods of Music History: Ancient Medieval Renaissance Baroque Classical Romantic 20th Century Current Musical styles in Europe have been changing over hundreds of years. Over a thousand years ago, monks all sang the same tune together called plainchant. Gradually over time, their style changed to singing different tunes at the same time and we call that polyphony. Music written in the 15th and 16th centuries is called Renaissance music. Triads, or chords were introduced during this time. Just as in the ancient times where small bands traveled with acrobats, now we had singers accompanied by a flute or a lute. In the latter part of the 16th century, Madrigals appeared as a few people singing a different line of music. During the Baroque period of music, the 17th and early 18th century, the use of chords was developed. One of the most popular types of music for the time was the “suite.” This was a collection of dance music that included the minuet. Opera was written in Italy in the early 17th century that was usually written about heroes in history. Wonderful scenery and special effects were incorporated back then. Ballet was beginning in France, so operas incorporated ballet dancing, too. Composers wrote balanced and graceful music during the Classical period from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. Symphonies and sonatas developed during this time. String quartets were popular and Vienna, Austria was an important musical center. Music about feelings and imagination developed in the 19th century. This period of music was known as the Romantic music. The Nutcracker Ballet by Tchaikovsky became famous along with many other operas and ballets. Music in the 20th century arrived with new ways of recording music and altering sounds electronically. New systems for writing music have also been invented. I use Garage Band for most of my recordings and can easily drag midi files there and learn new songs and how to play them. It is so amazing to me, when you think back on the history of music and how much has changed from ragtime, blues, jazz and pop. And the beat goes on.
