New Harmonies of the Sixties

By Diana Rogers

Pop music was never the same after the advent of the Beatles in the early Sixties. You knew something was happening when Shea Stadium in New York was filled with ninety thousand teenagers shrieking and gasping at these four young men, at that time, who were speaking their language and feeling their emotions. The Beatles music reflected the search for individuality and independence by the younger generation. I remember this incredible wave of music very well and it's lasting impact relevant for today's audience as well!

New harmonies were heard in this music, such as Major 7th, minor 7th and sus4 chords. The use of syncopated music was illustrated by the dotted quarter note followed by an eighth note. Arpeggiated chords such as C, Bm7 and Am7 were played like a Bach Prelude. Then one hears a new key introduced, AbMaj7 resolving to a sus4 dominant sound.

Another fun loving style of the 60's music is Chuck berry's Rock n' Roll. Do you remember hot rod songs? In the early sixties we heard from the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, the GTO's and numerous other West Coast bands. These tunes were the first cousins to the songs of the surfing craze.

Musically, both genres owed a heavy debt to rock pioneer Chuck Berry. Even in 1964 with the British invasion, a song called "The Little Old Lady (from Pasadena)" was a huge hit for Jan and Dean. Harmonies of the sixties was then, and is now, fun music to play! Wouldn't you agree?
