What Is a Short Story?

By Diana Rogers

Whether you’ve got little people of your own and you enjoy reading to them or you just happened to keep your entire collection of Little Golden Books, children’s books are a must in my home.

I’m taking a writer’s workshop online course and I thoroughly love it. I am applying huge amounts of information daily and applying it to some of my daily writing.

Let’s begin with short stories. I have a dear Irish friend, Shamus O’Neil who loves to tell a story. I have laughed aloud many, many times upon hearing several of his Irish short stories. They are so funny that I am sure this is what the instructor means by a short story.

Then there are Vignettes you know those short blurbs of poetic script. I passed by the Shakespeare Festival one summer in Oregon and thought to myself that surely there would be lots of mini vignettes going on inside the theater.

Perhaps an Essay could be a short story from my point of view; something that I’ve reflected upon. Yes, I’m comfortable with writing about what I have observed over the years with piano teaching.

Being Greek, I’ve heard many Tales shared amidst family members. These short stories are indeed Folklore and some could easily be called Wives’ Tales. When I ask the origin of the tale, the usual answer I receive is “Well, my mother told it to me and now I’m telling it to you!”

Do you suppose a Tall Tale is like a Fish Tale? I come from a long family of fisherman so I’ve heard many a story of the big fish that got away. How I wish I had seen that story with my own eyes!

Now a Novelette is a work of prose based on a minimum of 7500 word count. The composer Robert Schumann used Novelette as a title for some piano pieces and then later on George Gershwin did the same.

One thing for sure, the short story is a work of fiction that is shorter and more limited than the novel.

It usually focuses on one important event in the lives of a small number of central characters.

Short stories vary in length but are usually short enough to be able to be read in one sitting.

Do you remember “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow?” Washington Irving was famous for his short stories.

Stephen King and Ray Bradbury are particularly fond of writing a short story and two of my husband’s favorite authors.

I recall studying Edgar Allen Poe and J.D. Salinger’s short story collections in school.

F. Scott Fitzgerald was an American writer of novels and short stories, whose works were reminiscent of the Jazz Age.

There are so many more authors we could add to the list but I wanted to keep this story short!

I seldom read short stories as an adult, but I loved them as a kid. That's probably why I am an avid reader today.

Because you read a lot, you are indeed an excellent writer!

I thoroughly enjoyed your "short" story.

I have a favorite I'd like to add here. Charles Dickens, "The Pickwick Papers." Another favorite author of mine is Miss Read ... "Encounters at Thrush Green" is a book made up of a number of short stories.

It seems many jounalists writing for newspapers pen short stories and then compile them into books later.
